Recently, I have been working with Katie Jepson and Jill Vaughan at the University of Melbourne to plan what we’re calling the Linguistics Roadshow – an engagement program aimed at high school students, supported by the Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL).
From the CoEDL website:
This project will develop a Linguistics Roadshow for high-school students: an interactive showcase on the science of language, presenting the big questions and the little-known facts about language for a general audience. The Roadshow is primarily a form of outreach and community engagement to increase public understanding of language research as a varied and exciting scientific endeavour, and to raise the profile of linguistics in Australia. The core Roadshow activities will be fun, hands-on workshops run by CoEDL researchers at selected rural high-schools, and the development of engagement materials for students, teachers and the general public, accessible through the Roadshow’s website.
We’re still organising the details of the school visits, but have recently launched the Linguistics Roadshow website, which we hope will help students, teachers, and anyone else who’s interested to find out more about linguistics topics, and how to pursue them. We’ll also be starting a series of posts on tumblr (and keeping everyone updated on twitter and facebook). If you have any comments or suggestions, we’d love to hear them!
